From GoodReads:
Awaken the Warrior Within to Overcome All Obstacles... Matthew and Ryan awaken on the shore of a mysterious island with nothing other than themselves and the memory of being best friends. Surviving the night is the first of a long series of challenges that will test the best friends' resolve for not only survival, but maintaining their friendship. Do they have what it takes to overcome any obstacle? Or, will they die trying?
My Thoughts:
2.5 Stars rounded up to 3. I rarely round up, but after reading that the author was 12 when he wrote, I was amazed. I certainly could not have written a book at 12. But it also explained why the dialogue was so stiff for two teenaged boys. Their grammar was correct and there was only a few slang words. Also there was several times when there was a thought or observation then a redundant dialogue:
“He knew if they didn’t find shelter soon, they would both end up with frostbite. He recognized the signs of frostbite, and he could tell it was already setting in on the tips of his cold fingers. His toes and feet would soon be next. “We have to find shelter fast or we are going to get frostbite,” ”
I understood the necessary premise of short term memory loss to heighten the mystery of the island. But I didn’t see the value of having long term memories removed, like what parents looked like and what they learned in school. This book was heavy in themes of friendship and teamwork and, I think, geared more toward middle grades instead of YA. But I would recommend it to middle grade readers. It was kinda boring as an adult.
